Map, 1861, of the area around Norfolk, Va. Drawn by Henry F. Wilson, a member of the 3rd Ala. Infantry Regiment, it shows the arrangement of Confederate forces in the area, including Wilson's own regiment. In contrast to the Confederate forces depicted, the map provides minimal information on Union forces. It states a scale of approximately 1" = 2 miles and depicts towns, hospitals, forts, bridges, roads, and bodies of water. Landmarks depicted on the map include the Gosport Navy Yard, Chesapeake Bay, Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads, Craney Island, Pig's Point, Sewell's Point, and other points on the shoreline. A few communities are designated, such as Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, and Kempsville. Waterways pictured on the map include the James River, the Nansemond River, Willoughby Bay, and various creeks. Included with the map is an early tracing of it which provides information on missing portions of the original.

The Third Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery in April, 1861. It was the first Alabama command that was sent to Virginia. Mustered into service at Lynchburg, 4 May, the regiment was ordered to Norfolk. There it was in a temporary brigade with the 1st and 12 VA, under Col. Jones M. On 1861 Apr. 23 Henry F. Wilson enlisted as a private in the Mobile Rifles, Co. K, 3rd Ala. Infantry Regiment. While a member of the 3rd Ala. Infantry Regiment, Wilson fought in the battles of Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Winchester, and in the Wilderness Campaign. He was paroled in Appomattox.
